Peripheral Neuropathy | The often-overlooked disease

Dr.  Rizaldy Pinzon (3rd from right)  with the executives of Merck Inc.  Philippines and the event's host,  Ms.  Gelli Victor during the NENOIN Symposium  held at Marco Polo Hotel in Ortigas

Do you sometimes feel a tingling sensation or numbness in your extremities?  Most specifically in your toes or fingertips, can also be the hands and feet as well.  We sometimes mistook it as "nangangalay" in Tagalog meaning, just a feeling of numbness brought about by wrong positioning of our body that causes temporary block or uneven blood circulation in our system.

The four Cardinal Signs of the often-overlooked disease are Paresthesia (prickling), Numbness, Burning and Sharp Pain. If you are experiencing all these signs, chances are you might be suffering from Peripheral Neuropathy.

During the NENOIN Symposium, Merck Inc. has managed to set up booths wherein we get to test the condition of our nerves. The whole process was facilitated by medical practitioners and doctors.

My good friend and co-blogger Lou having her sensory nerves checked.

What is Peripheral Neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy is a damage to one or more of your peripheral nerves— the ones in the periphery of your body, such as the nerves in your toes and fingertips —that carry messages to/from the brain and spinal cord from/to the rest of the body.
The damage means that they don't function properly, and the messages that travel between your central and peripheral nervous system are disrupted.

QUICK FACTS ABOUT PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY

  • Causes and risk factors of peripheral neuropathy are multiple and include conditions such as:
  • Genetics Family member suffers from neuropathy); chronic diseases, like diabetes; environmental toxins, alcoholism; nutritional deficiencies e g vitamin B deficiency and other unexplained causes.
  • People with neuropathy can feel dizzy in the shower when they have their eyes closed while shampooing. In fact, verifying the presence of dizziness while closing the eyes is one of the tests a doctor might do to investigate whether you’re suffering from nerve damage in order to diagnose neuropathy.
  • The causes of nerve damage are unknown in around 22% of cases.
  • Since they have lower sensitivity to pain, people with nerve impairment are at risk to injure their feet without even noticing it.
  • Neuropathy is often unrecognized or not investigated because the signs are subtle or even not detectable at the beginning.
  • 34% of people over 80 years old have nerve impairments, which can be associated to the disease called neuropathy. This also concerns the 15% of those over the age of 40.

Neurobion Vitamin B Complex

Neurobion Forte (neurobion.com)

What I''ve learned from the symposium was,  in order for us to be freed from any peripheral neuropathies, aside from taking the Neurobion Vitamins,  we should also lead a healthy and improved lifestyle  with proper diet and exercise.  It's a lot easier to say, right?! But difficult to do.  But if we are more than willing and open to do it,  then let it be done for the improvement of our physical and self-being.

Neuroblon Forte treatment: Neurotropic B vitamins combination has been proven effectively for peripheral neuropathy sufferers in relieving symptoms, which have been included into the study independently from the cause of their disease. The symptoms were even more reduced over longer duration of treatment (for a 3 months period tested and the treatment was well tolerated.
