Watsons health expert shares heart-friendly tips to pump you up and keep you going

Cardiovascular diseases cause 1 in every 3 deaths, making it one of the world’s leading killers. In fact, based on the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)’s data, ischemic heart disease is the top cause of death in 2021 with 17.9 percent of the total deaths.

This February marks not just Valentine's Day but Philippine Heart Month. The yearly celebration aims to promote cardiovascular health and wellness. Protecting our hearts against potential heartbreaks and ailments is essential. While the heart is the hardest working muscle in the body, it can still become fragile if not taken care of.


Keep a healthy diet
Heart diseases are serious and fatal but it is possible to prevent them even before symptoms arise. Keeping a healthy diet gives you a good start.

Add fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts into your meals, and avoid processed, canned, and fast foods. If you’re a fan of salty meats, try seasoning them with Calamansi juice and vinegar instead.

Araneta City holds webinar on Gen Zs as consumers of the future

City of Firsts webinar for lessees tackles growing influence of young consumers
Generation Z (or Gen Z) is on the rise. And they’re increasingly influencing how households are purchasing and consuming.

This was the central theme of the Zoom webinar held last February 17 by Araneta City for its lessees. Titled "The Gen Z Shopper", the webinar tapped JP Yamsuan, Associate Director for Consumer Insights of Nielsen Philippines, to help the City of Firsts’ lessees garner the attention of this young, up and coming subsect of society.

According to Nielsen’s data, Gen Zs makes up one-fourth of the global population and they will comprise 27% of the global labor workforce by 2025. Though this demographic is still quite young, 70% of them are already driving family purchase decisions.

In the Philippines, Gen Zs comprise 30% of the entire population. This is why, according to Yamsuan, it is imperative to capture the attention of this generation of people. “It is definitely a sizable market, it’s a sizable segment. We definitely have to make sure that we are seen and heard by the Gen Z population.”

Yamsuan also delved deeper into four characteristics that make Gen Z unique: digitally connected, visual creatures, craving authenticity, and woke. “It is important that we are aware of these macro level influences for us to identify how we can better attract them,” Yamsuan said.
He added that the attention span of Gen Z is very short, shorter than Millennials who have also grown up and matured around online content

. According to data, Gen Z only has an average attention span of eight seconds, much shorter than the attention span of Millennials at 12 seconds. They are also faster when it comes to browsing content at just 2.5 seconds when using a desktop computer and 1.7 seconds when on mobile devices.

Yamsuan noted that this is where bite-sized media can help capture their attention. “That means we need to be more creative, we need to be more exciting. A shorter attention span means that we need to capture their attention faster than your typical marketing strategies,” Yamsuan added.

In designing content, Yamsuan reminded that shorter is better given the short attention span of this demographic. Using slanguage such as FoMO (fear of missing out) and YOLO (you only live once) can also help a brand become more attuned to how Gen Z speaks. Also, using platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube can reach more Gen Z than Facebook.

Another key characteristic of Gen Z is their longing to create a better world. They are socially aware because they have access to unprecedented information about social issues. They are inclined to support causes that promote social justice. This makes them favor brands that care about the issues they care about. This is why, Yamsuan said, brands should embed sustainability in all its endeavors and that they should be very sensitive to social issues.

“Gen Z are very discerning, because they are exposed to digital media and it makes them a population who will think about what they will buy or where they’ll go," Yamsuan stressed. "We should make sure that whenever we communicate with them, we provide them with the right and necessary information to make their decisions.”

Meanwhile, the webinar also served as a platform for Araneta City to introduce to its lessees the soon-to-open Gateway Mall 2, and the commercial hub's marketing plans for 2023.

Listen, Think, Feel, with the New Song from The Dawn

“Is love still a thing?”
This can easily be a line in a love song. But, this is a question raised by one of the country's original rock bands, The Dawn, in their new song "Earth."
Known for its anthem songs like "Salamat" and "Iisang Bangka," "Earth" asks the existential question especially in the midst of all the political, social, and even personal uncertainties.

The Dawn frontman Jett Pangan explains, "We, as human beings, when we’re faced with troubles that seem insurmountable, we tend to look the other way. Maybe not to say we’re in denial, it's more of the fear of the unknown. It’s been a struggle to be a human being. There’s always the question, can we go on like this? Is this the way we’re supposed to deal with things? Is there a better way?"

He pointed out that it’s not condescending but, in fact he asks himself the same question. The pandemic also raised that big question. “We're all hoping that after all these we become better people," he said.
Trust The Dawn to come up with a song that is timely and relevant. The society has seen a rise in mental health concerns among the youth. In fact, in a study by the University of the Philippines Population Institute (UPPI), it highlighted that between 2013 and 2021, there are twice the number of young Filipinos who felt loneliness, sadness, and being disliked.

One of the band’s guitarists Rommel “Sancho” Sanchez, emphasized that “Is love still a thing,” can also be read as “is empathy still a thing?” Sanchez said that with the mode of communications now, it’s easy to be snarky. Their hope is that through this song and with this one powerful line, people will pause, reflect, and hope that they can be a little kinder.

Apart from the significance of its lyrics, there are a lot of reasons that make “Earth” distinct.

It was recorded during the pandemic and every member of the group had to record individually. The Dawn drummer JB Leonor shared he made a story with the drum parts alone. There’s a reason for every note of the drum.

“Earth” is the last song that their bassist Mon Legaspi recorded before he passed away. And it was an ode to him that they committed to finish the track.
Sanchez was the last one to record the guitar parts. “I lost the recordings when my hard drive failed. We had to ask permission from Mon’s sister and asked a friend to help extract his parts. It was really difficult for me to record my parts,” he said.

The song itself went through a lot and now that it’s here, it is definitely a treat not only to the loyal fans of The Dawn but to everyone who appreciates great music.
The reception to “Earth” inspires the band to keep on going. Credit goes to Francis “Kiko” Reyes, one of the guitarists, who said that during the pandemic, the band continued to connect creatively. Pangan enthused that with all his rally calls and with the reception to the new song, all fingers point to a new collection of songs, or an EP.

Recognizing also how dynamic the music industry is these days, The Dawn wants to make sure they are a part of it. He added that the labels and genres now are blurred and people are more accepting when they listen to music. They do not specify if a song is too rock or too hiphop.

Through the years, The Dawn has been blessed with a platform to be heard and this time, it’s their new song “Earth.” There’s no line to cross now that music has melded in all genres. And The Dawn has a lot to offer and being a true rockstar that they are, they are just going where music takes them. No pigeonholing, just true love for music.

Home Credit, OWWA partner to honor OFWs in Western Visayas

Home Credit Philippines, the country’s leading consumer finance company, in partnership with Overseas Workers Welfare Association (OWWA), honored the heroes of the modern age, the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), during the OFW Family Day Caravan in Western Visayas.

The two-week-long caravan was attended by over 2,000 OFWs and OFW associations combined from the provinces of Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental. The program aimed to create an avenue for the OFWs and their families to reconnect and spend quality time with their loved ones.





Aside from family bonding activities, the caravan also opened conversations on financial literacy and education, addressing the common problems of OFWs spending years working abroad only to come home with little to no savings.

“Our main goal for the caravan was to show appreciation for the Filipino migrant workers. We want to empower them to make informed decisions on how to spend and manage their hard-earned money from working overseas. We at OWWA Region 6 support our OFWs all the way, and we want them to succeed and secure a better life for themselves and their families,” said Rizza Joy Moldes, OWWA Region 6 OIC director.

mWell OnTheGo, a portable mobile digital clinic, was also launched in remote communities. Each package is filled with solar panels, a power station, Smart pocket wifi, and a tablet/mobile phone preloaded with the mWell PH app. These mobile clinics are used to help bedridden patients and those living in areas without electricity.
