Brotzeit Hosts Cooking Classes for Kids

This summer, Brotzeit is once again offering kids a unique opportunity to learn how to cook simple German dishes in a fun setting. Dubbed Kinder Koche, or little chef in German, the kiddie cooking classes will be conducted by Brotzeit’s Culinary Director, Chef Ivan Maminta, who is Swiss-trained and fluent in German.

This will mark the second year that Brotzeit will be offering these cooking sessions for kids as last year's students & parents were very happy with the results.

German Pretzel

Classes kicked off on April 10 with lessons on how to cook Brezn (German pretzels). This will be followed by the next course, Schokokuchen (Chocolate cake), on April 25, Fladen (Pizza) on May 16, and finally, Apfelstrudel (Apple Strudel), on May 23. Along the way, kids will learn key German phrases, too!

Each course costs P1,500 and includes an apron for the parent/guardian, a shirt for the child, basic kitchen tools, recipe sheets and a Certificate of Completion. (Tip: If you are enrolling more than one child, or if your child is taking more than one course, you can get great discounts!)

Doesn't that sound like a fun way to learn new things and bond with the kiddos this summer? For inquiries or to reserve your slot, phone (02) 631 1489 or email reservations@brotzeitphil.com. Brotzeit German Bier Bar & Restaurant is located at 112 Streetscape, Shangri-La Plaza Mall, EDSA.

‘Kid Kulafu’ shares the untold story of Manny Pacquiao via Pay Per View on TFC

Buboy Villar is 'Kid Kulafu"

Before the much-awaited “Fight of the Century” on May 2 (May 3 AEST, Guam and NZDT), Pay Per View on TFC unveils the early days of one of the prized fighters set to bout, Manny Pacquiao, via the movie “Kid Kulafu” starting April 22.

Before People’s Champ Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao faces fellow legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the fight of his life, “Kid Kulafu” details the bareness before the boxing gloves, and his losses before his wins in the boxing ring Pacquiao called life.

Film director Paul Soriano said the film follows Pacquiao’s early days as a child dealing with his family’s search for a home up until the time he faced more challenges as a teenager struggling to make ends meet in General Santos City, Saranggani province (Mindanao, Philippines).   According to Soriano, it took Star Cinema and Ten17 Productions two years of extensive research in order to faithfully capture the life of the child before the champion.

"Kid Kulafu" director, Paul Soriano

"Viewers will discover in the film how hard life was for Manny as a kid in General Santos City. They will get to know a young boy who had nothing but attitude, passion, and fighting spirit to face every challenge head on and knock it out one by one," shares Soriano.

Pacquiao opened up himself to Soriano in the past and shared: “All the pain and the knock outs I experienced in boxing were just physical pain.  But you know what is more painful?  It's the fact that you have nothing to eat, no home where you can rest, and having a broken family.  And I endured all those when I was young."

Buboy Villar who plays the young Pacquiao similarly feels the challenge as he was chosen amongst thousands of hopefuls.  In the end, Villar feels proud that he was chosen to portray a Filipino who serves as an inspiration to many people.  He says: "Because of 'Kid Kulafu' I realized that Sir Manny can be a huge source of inspiration to kids of today.  He is hardworking, determined to rise above poverty, and has high respect for his parents and family," shared Buboy. "When Sir Manny stepped into amateur boxing, his goal was not to win.  He wanted to help provide meals to his family and make his parents proud of him."

"Kid Kulafu" also stars Alessandra de Rossi as Dionisia Pacquiao

Joining Villar are Alessandra de Rossi (Dionisia Pacquiao) and Alex Medina (Rosalio).  Also part of the cast is Cesar Montano who plays Pacquiao’s uncle Sardo Dapidran who played a crucial role in the boxing legend’s formative years.  “Kid Kulafu” also stars Khalil Ramos and Igi Boy Flores.  "Kid Kulafu" is written by Froilan Medina under creative consultant Amor Olaguer and directed by Soriano with fight director Erwin Tagle.

Get to know more about the young Pacquiao via “Kid Kulafu” on Pay Per View on TFC via IPTV from April 22 to June 22 in the Middle East, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand; via satellite in Australia and New Zealand from April 22 until May 10; and via TFC’s official online service TFC.tv from April 22 until July 11.

RCBC Bankard launches Unli0% installment program all year round

Acquiring a credit card requires absolute discipline and you must be very good when it comes to budgeting as they say. As for me, I use my own credit card when paying for my groceries and other necessary stuff for the house or simply for my son's needs.

During a tete-a-tete with Ms. Angela C. Mirasol, Vice President and Marketing Group Head
RCBC BANKARD SERVICES CORPORATION, or otherwise known as Ms. Anj, she was very helpful in explaining to us the flexibility and mechanics of the RCBC Bankard UNLI0% installment.

Anj Mirasol has more than a decade’s experience in Marketing.  She has handled various products and services from debit cards, to electronic channels, and now leads the Marketing Group of RCBC Bankard, in marketing the RCBC –issued RCBC Bankard credit cards.

Ms. Angie Mirasol
Anj strongly believes that Marketing has a strategic function and goes beyond running promotions.  She is actively involved in branding initiatives as well as in the development of products, product features, and benefits.

From 2012, when she joined RCBC Bankard, she was actively involved in the launch of two co-branded specialty cards: the Fully Booked RCBC Bankard MasterCard, and the HBC-RCBC Bankard MasterCard.  She also collaborated in the development and launch of the Exclusive Travel Privileges and the proprietary Unli 0% which are both deemed as compelling differentiators for RCBC Bankard.

Last year, RCBC Bankard was recognized internationally in the Retail Banker International Asia Trail Blazer Award, as 2014 Product Excellence in Credit Cards, and as Credit Card Product of the Year 2014-Philippines, in the Credit International & Payments International Trailblazer Award.

Previous to joining RCBC Bankard Services Corporation, Anj worked with the Bank of the Philippine Islands, as OIC of the Electronic Channels Marketing & Sales Division.

Anj graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Arts, Major in Philosophy, at the Ateneo De Manila University, and took her MBA at the University of the Philippines, where she was awarded top 5 of the graduating class.

Having such a well-defined credentials, great achievements and diverse experience in banking, Ms. Anj was able to answer all the queries being asked to her during our lunch out. Being a single parent like yours truly, one of my main concerns is about financial. We must admit, life's not that always smooth sailing, or sometimes, we may need to prioritize our finances and in some cases, during emergency cases, we do count on this plastic card that pays, and that's our credit cards.

I wanna commend RCBC Bankard for coming up with this kind of program, the Unli0% installment. Ms. Anj was able to explain to us clearly that for example, we use our RCBC Bankard to pay for our grocery this month, it's not going to reflect or earn interest for the next three months, isn't it amazing? That's a lot of help for us, homemakers and cardholders, right? We need not worry about it for 3 months and at the same time, we can also save some money.

Converting straight purchases to 0% installment all year round is now possible with RCBC Bankard.
With the Unli 0% installment feature, cardholders need not worry about paying immediately for every purchase they make because they can convert every transaction to 0% installment for 3 months at any given time of the year.

With no limitation on the purchase amount or the number of times they can avail of the feature, cardholders are able to manage their funds better and keep within their budget. Moreover, they do not have to worry whether or not the merchant allows installment purchases. All they have to do is charge the purchase to their RCBC Bankard then call RCBC Bankard’s Customer Service number at 888-1888 or 888-1883 (for Platinum, Infinite, or World cardholders) and request that their purchase be converted to 0% installment.

UNLI 0% is the first of its kind card offering that gives RCBC Bankard cardholders the unprecedented privilege of being able to manage their finances better since they can convert ALL their STRAIGHT purchases to 0% INSTALLMENT.

With UNLI 0% cardholders can purchase any item, at any amount, anywhere, including overseas and online, and have these converted to a three month, 0% installment payment term, by simply calling the RCBC Bankard Customer Service hotline.

UNLI 0% is the most flexible 0% Installment Program with NO LIMITATIONS.

>>UNLI 0% is not limited to the number of accredited merchants.
RCBC Bankard will be able to convert straight transactions to 0% installment, regardless if the merchant or establishment is accredited with RCBC Bankard.  Other card companies/Issuers can only process transactions from their accredited merchants.

>>UNLI 0% is not limited to amount.
Merchants will require a minimum of Php3,000 or US$68.18 (@ Php44=USD1.00) for 0% Installment.  With RCBC Bankard, this is not a limitation because it is processed as a straight transaction, and therefore is not covered by the 0% Installment minimum amount purchase requirement imposed by the accredited merchants.

>>UNLI 0% is not limited to location.

Accredited merchants for 0% installment are limited to locations where pre-programmed POS terminals are deployed.  With RCBC Bankard, regardless of the POS terminals used, RCBC Bankard can convert the purchase to 0% installment, including online and overseas transactions.

The UNLI 0% INSTALLMENT PROGRAM (“UNLI 0%”) is a proprietary program of RCBC Bankard Credit Cards.

WHY DID RCBC BANKARD INTRODUCE UNLI 0%

In the Philippines, a common problem of credit card holders is “excessive debt”.  Credit Card doesn’t feel like cash to cardholders so they spend more liberally whenever they’re using their plastic.  While the card company can benefit from the finance charge, unwise use of the card can be detrimental both for the cardholders and for the card company in the long run.  Given the possible pitfall that our cardholders may fall into, RCBC Bankard developed proprietary financial management tools:

>>Spend Monitor provides cardholders with free SMS alerts for defined transactions that they have set during registration, including getting an alert if they already exceeded their predetermined monthly budget for their card.

>>Spend Analyzer, transforms the statement of account from a simple notice of monthly dues to a comprehensive financial management tool that guides cardholders in understanding their monthly and their year-to-date spending by printing the summary of purchases according to categories including: Supermarket, Department Store/Apparel, Dining, Motoring, Medical, Utilities, and Others.

>>Unli 0%  is a proprietary program that allows cardholders to manage their cash flow better since they can pay for all their straight purchases in three months at no interest.  This is offered during heavy spending season including back-to-school (April-June) and the Holidays (October-December).  It has been made available all year round for purchases made overseas.

Unli 0% has been developed because we saw the benefits of the 0% Installment Program and its limitations. 0% Installment is advantageous for cardholders who cannot afford to pay for the item/service outright, as well as for those who want to manage their cash flow.  However, while it is helpful, it is limited in terms of merchants and locations.  These limitations served as our opportunity in developing Unli 0%.  With Unli 0%, all straight purchases can be converted to 0% Installment.  Our cardholders enjoy better cash flow management because they can settle their purchases made in the Philippines or abroad in easy, affordable payments.

Being the first and only credit card to provide a no-limits 0% installment program our cardholders have the unique privilege of being able to afford better things and better experiences, and since they have the tools to manage their spending better, they can avoid falling in the “debt trap” which is a common pitfall for other credit cardholders.   Unli 0%, along with RCBC Bankard’s other complimentary and proprietary financial management tools, have managed to transform the credit card from a tool for overspending to a device for wiser spending.

I wanna share you some of the testimonies of the cardholders:

“Life is indeed difficult if you’re a single parent but thanks to my RCBC Bankard I was able to stretch my budget. I used to pay all my bills in cash but now  that I  have my RCBC Bankard, I can budget my money as best as  I  can. RCBC Bankard’s Unli 0% allowed me to make big ticket purchases then pay in 3 months installment. This also helped me save funds without limiting my spending power via my credit card. Thanks RCBC Bankard for helping me all the way!”
---Joseph Rey Bacalso

“Having an RCBC Bankard credit card has improved my life in more ways than I can imagine. Now that I am sending my son to school for the first time, my trusty credit card has done it again for me.  Education can be expensive but it is an investment that is worth every peso.  Today was his first day in school, seeing our four-year-old son happy and utterly friendly to everyone, was the complete validation that we made the right decision to send him in this school.  I thank RCBC Bankard for making this possible.   UNLI 0% Installment is the perfect help this time of the year – enrollment season! With my RCBC Bankard, I can take care of school fees and still spend wisely.”
---Ma Regina Ronquillo

“I’ve had my RCBC Bankard since 2009 but I never thought this would help me put up my business! When I gave birth to my third baby I decided to stop working so I could stay at home to take care of my 3 kids. I started to think of putting up a business that I could manage as a full time mom. I decided to put up a" retail store" at home and the only thing I had to help me fill up my store was my RCBC Bankard. Thank you so much RCBC Bankard for offering  services that suit my business like unli 0%  that make it perfect for my growing business.”
---Mary Joy Endique

DOH, NGOs join Philippine hemophilia community for World Hemophilia Day

Mr. Jeppe B. Thiesen, Gen. Manager, Novo Nordisk Pharmaceutical Philippines

To raise awareness and understanding about hemophilia and related bleeding disorders, the Department of Health (DOH) and various non-government organizations joined the Hemophilia Association of the Philippines for Love & Service (HAPLOS) in marking the World Hemophilia Day at Glorietta Mall in Makati City on April 11 to 12.

The two-day activity called “Count Me In” gathered different hemophilia groups and support groups to highlight the importance of being more active, leading the way to improved access to treatment. The event also called for public support for the hemophilia community, as well as seek government support for persons with hemophilia.

“We are honored to lead the country’s celebration of the World Hemophilia Day, celebrated every April 17, because it is an opportunity not only to generate understanding about hemophilia and other bleeding disorders, but also to inspire change. This event seeks to unite patients, health care professionals, advocacy groups, governments and industry partners to make the world better for the local bleeding disorder community,” said Ric Felipe, president of HAPLOS.

During the opening ceremony, DOH Undersecretary Dr. Vicente Belizario expressed the agency’s commitment in helping those with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders to address the challenges they are currently facing, especially in closing the gaps in care and treatment.

Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) Executive Director Dr. Julius Lecciones, on the other hand, discussed about the current status of Hemophilia treatment in the country. According to him, there are only about 1,200 People With Hemophilia (PWH) currently registered with the Philippine Hemophilia Foundation. He emphasized the need to educate more people with the help of PWH themselves, in order to provide adequate treatment for those living with such condition.

Representatives from the Kythe Foundation were also present to share their perspectives in winning against Hemophilia and managing the condition. Kythe Foundation, an organization aimed towards improving the quality of life among hospitalized children with cancer and other chronic illness, is a group of trained professionals providing the Child Life Program.

To understand more about Hemophilia, parents of children diagnosed with the condition provided testimonials, such as hemophilia’s impact on their day to day lives. According to the parents, they hope that by sharing their real-life stories and experiences, they will be able to help other families in the Philippines who are dealing with the same issues to live as normally as possible.

One of the parents of children diagnosed with Hemophilia giving his heartfelt testimony

Providing entertainment during the opening ceremony was Darryl Shy, a finalist of “The Voice Philippines.”

The “Count Me In” event also featured psycho-social activities and structured play for children by Kythe Foundation. Kids were also delighted with other art activities such as face painting and caricature.

Hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, inherited platelet disorders, and other factor deficiencies are lifelong bleeding disorders that prevent blood from clotting properly. People with bleeding disorders do not have enough of a particular clotting factor, a protein in blood that controls bleeding, or else it does not work properly.

The severity of a person’s bleeding disorder usually depends on the amount of clotting factor that is missing or not functioning.

People with hemophilia can experience uncontrolled bleeding that can result from a seemingly minor injury. Bleeding into joints and muscles causes severe pain and disability while bleeding into major organs, such as the brain, can cause death.

According to the World Hemophilia Federation, there are about 10,000 Filipinos with hemophilia and about 1-million Filipinos possibly with von Willebrand Disease and other bleeding disorders.

Despite being considered as a serious and lifelong condition, awareness for hemophilia has not gained momentum in most countries. As a result, significant disparities in treatment still exist, with about 75 percent receiving very inadequate treatment or no treatment at all.

The activity was co-organized by HAPLOS and the Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) and supported by the Novo Nordisk Hemophilia Foundation, Glorietta Mall and BusinessMirror Group of Publications.
