The Philippine Red Cross' Haiyan Journey

Ms. Gwendolyn Pang - Secretary General of The Philippine Red Cross
Sen. Richard Gordon - Chaiman of the Philippine Red Cross
Mr. Kari Isoma - Head of Country Delegation, IFRC
Mr. Wolde Saugeron - Communications Coordinator, ICRC

Two struggling and hopeful years have been past, for the victims of the toughest typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) to ever hit the Philippines and breaking global history. They say the Filipinos are considered the most resilient people in the world. A lot of stories has been told, enormous amounts of comments, news, reactions  and feed backs had surfaced, but still, the top and most viable question for today for the victims of typhoon Haiyan would be : "How are they doing after two years?"

As early as November 6, Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Chapters were advised by its chairman Richard Gordon to take immediate precautionary measures, and mobilize units for the consolidation of supplies, vehicles, equipment, and manpower. On November 7, Chairman Gordon sent a text blast to all PRC chapters to activate response units in the respective areas, which were previously identified.
During this time, the PRC leadership also called for an emergency meeting with Movement Partners (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Australian RC, Spanish RC, German RC, The Netherland RC, Finish RC). Together, they discussed the plans on how to address the immediate needs and life-saving measures to the vulnerable population affected by typhoon Haiyan.

Haiyan made landfall on November 8, and in less than 48 hours, PRC was on the grounds removing debris to open up main roads (more than 10,000 cubic meters of debris were collected), dispensing 68,702 hot meals and food supplies to hungry survivors, and attending to the medical needs of every citizen. While other agencies were still organizing plans and mobilizing their units, PRC was already delivering crucial services to the people.

On November 11, the PRC organized an additional humanitarian convoy that brought relief supplies (food and non-food), rescue equipment, transport vehicles, ambulances, pay loaders, and water tankers. Part of the convoy were trained and skilled personnel of the PRC and Red Cross 143 volunteers, tasked to assist and provide immediate and life-saving support to the disaster affected population in Central Philippines.

In addition to food and water, one of the essential items that were distributed during the relief operation was the emergency shelter repair kit that helped 51,185 families to start the repair and construction of their damaged homes.

Since line of communication was disrupted in areas affected by Typhoon Haiyan, the PRC deployed its communication kit, helping survivors get in touch with their families. With the help of PRC’s partner mobile network, satellite phones were provided and the PRC was able to reconnect 35,230 families.

While the PRC units were busy on the ground, Chairman Gordon was also coordinating help with foreign partners, and ensuring that their donations were brought to the affected areas safely and as swiftly as possible.

During the emergency phase of the operation, around 230,000 families were supported with essential household items (blankets, mosquito nets, plastic mats, water containers, hygiene kits, kitchen sets, and tarpaulins) – making it as the biggest operation in the history of the Philippine Red Cross.

Red Cross’ housing project for Yolanda survivors nearing completion

More than 66,000 families now have safer, more disaster resilient homes in typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) affected areas, as the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) has already completed 86 percent of its target number of homes to be built in its shelter project under its typhoon Haiyan recovery program.
As of date, a total of 66,011 families were provided shelter out of the target 80,203, which is targeted to be completed until the end of 2016. This is the largest ever shelter assistance that the Red Cross has provided in any post-disaster operations locally and globally, in terms of number of houses built and amount of shelter assistance provided.

“What we are doing is not just building shelter for the families affected. More importantly, we are giving them back their dignity, which is why families are involved from the beginning in the process of building their homes,” said Richard Gordon, chairman and CEO of the PRC.

In building shelter, the PRC involves the community in all aspects of the building process. The beneficiaries themselves were part of the consultations regarding designs and plans for the shelters that the Red Cross and its partners were to build for them. Beneficiaries are even involved in the actual building of the houses.

Houses built trough the PRC housing project were built employing the “build back better” principle for disaster resilience and have been proven to withstand some of the strongest typhoons that came after Yolanda.

The shelter project covers the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Cebu, Eastern Samar, Iloilo, Leyte, Palawan, and Western Samar; as well as the cities of Bogo, Ormoc and Tacloban.
“Providing shelter for families affected by Yolanda would not be possible without the support of our partners, private companies who supported our shelter program, and our partners in the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement,” said Gordon.

The housing project is supported by PRC’s partners in the International Red Cross Red Crescent (RCRC) Movement, composed of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and several National Societies.

RCRC National Societies involved in the Haiyan housing project include Finnish Red Cross, Spanish Red Cross, German Red Cross, Hong Kong Red Cross, Taiwan Red Cross, French Red Cross, Japanese Red Cross, Norwegian Red Cross, British Red Cross, American Red Cross, Australian Red Cross, Netherlands Red Cross, Palang Merah Indonesia (PMI) or Indonesian Red Cross, Qatar Red Crescent Society, Swiss Red Cross, and Bahrain Red Crescent. PRC’s private partners that have contributed to the housing project include Air Asia, HSBC, CUBE, Citibank, and AusAID.

Red Cross Haiyan assistance restored livelihoods, shelter, community facilities and services

As of end of October, 884,228 people have benefitted from PRC’s Haiyan Recovery Program which includes services ranging from shelter, livelihood, cash relief assistance, water and sanitation, hygiene promotion, and rehabilitation of classrooms.

“The success of our Haiyan operations would not have been possible without the support of our partners in the Red Cross Red Crescent (RCRC) Movement and private partners who have generously contributed to help alleviate the suffering of those whose lives have been affected by Typhoon Haiyan. Because of the massive destruction caused by Haiyan, there was also a massive outpouring of support that came to us that helped restore people’s lives and dignity,” said PRC chairman Richard Gordon.

To date, PRC’s Haiyan Recovery program has built 66,011 homes out of the target 80,203 or 86 percent of the target number of houses to be built, amounting to around 2.2 billion pesos. The Red Cross Haiyan shelter program is spread across nine Haiyan-affected provinces: Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Cebu, Eastern Samar, Iloilo, Leyte, Palawan, and Western Samar.

During the emergency phase, the Red Cross was able to provide emergency cash relief assistance to 90,779 families, the biggest ever cash transfer programming operations in the RCRC Movement history after an emergency or disaster. A total of PhP 281,529,400 or USD 6,256,208 was disbursed to affected families in a matter of four months from December 2013 to March 2014. Unconditional cash relief given per family ranged from PhP2,000 to PhP5,000.

Provision of shelter was augmented with livelihood assistance in the form of livelihood cash grants that beneficiaries used to start a new livelihood source or restart their lost livelihood. As of date, 59,218 families out of the target 62,289 households or 95 percent of the target number of beneficiaries, have been provided with livelihood assistance through conditional cash grants. The total amount of livelihood assistance to date is P592,180,000.

Aside from housing and livelihood, PRC also focused on health, sanitation and education. Through the Haiyan recovery operations, there are now 32 schools with improved access to water and sanitation facilities and 38 health facilities that have been repaired and reconstructed, which will cater to 222,618 individuals based on the population of the area.

The education sector was not left behind as the Red Cross also focused on restoring classrooms so students can go back to their classes. As of date, 410 classrooms have already been rehabilitated and reconstructed, of which 39,165 students have benefitted. There were also 5,083 students who have received school kits from the Red Cross.

Red Cross staff, volunteers beat all odds to reach affected areas in the aftermath of Haiyan

In the aftermath of super typhoon Haiyan, Philippine Red Cross (PRC) staff and volunteers
It was a race against time as Philippine Red Cross (PRC) staff and volunteers beat the odds of logistics problems, difficulty of access, and the pressing need to reach the affected areas to be able to bring life-saving relief items and services to those who have been affected by super typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda).

So far, the Philippine Red Cross has really did their job well. Congrats to the team most especially to Chairman Gordon!

Understanding Thyroid Cancer

Members of the Philippine Thyroid Cancer Survivor Inc. pose for a photo op in one of the gatherings they usually hold to show its support to its members who are undergoing treatments for thyroid cancer or its symptoms.

Thyroid cancer may have a low incidence rate worldwide but here in the Philippines it is the 7th leading form of cancer among Filipinos with an estimated 3,024 new cases in 2012.

According to the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research, in 2012 the country has recorded at least 865 deaths due to thyroid cancer, which accounts for the 1.5 percent of cancer related deaths, and in five years new thyroid cancer cases will reach to 11,280 each year.

Though it can occur in any age group, thyroid cancer is most common among women between 20 to 44 years old. It is three times more common in females than in males and its aggressiveness significantly increases at age 30 and in older patients.

Importance of early diagnosis and treatment
Thyroid cancer is a malignant growth of tumor in the thyroid gland. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of the neck right below the throat. The thyroid gland secretes thyroxine, a hormone responsible for the regulation of metabolic rate, blood sugar, heartbeat and renal functions.

According to the Thyroid Cancer Association, Inc., (TCAI), “Many patients, especially in the early stages of thyroid cancer, do not experience symptoms. However, as the cancer develops, symptoms can include a lump or nodule in the front of the neck, hoarseness or difficulty speaking, swollen lymph nodes, difficulty swallowing or breathing, and pain in the throat or neck.”

Although thyroid cancer is generally slow-growing and curable,2,3 up to 30% of patients can still experience recurrence. Together with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, life-long compliance to follow-up is critical to detect persistent and recurrent disease.

There are different types of thyroid cancer, the most common being the Papillary variant, which accounts for around 80% of cases. The other types are Follicular (around 10% of cases), Medullary (around 4%) and Anaplastic (2%).
Disease management
The primary treatment for thyroid cancer is thyroidectomy, which is the surgical removal of the thyroid gland.

After the removal of the thyroid, to effectively wipe out remnants of cancer tissues and any other thyroid gland tissue, doctors usually advise radioactive iodine (RAI) treatment.
To effectively monitor for persistence and recurrence of disease, patients undergo follow-up using Thyroglogulin (Tg) blood tests, neck ultrasound tests and diagnostic RAI whole-body scans.

It must be noted that since patients already have the thyroid gland removed, the body will no longer produce thyroid hormones, hence patients will need thyroid hormone replacement therapy with levothyroxine to prevent hypothyroidism for the rest of their lives, in order to compensate for the loss of thyroxine in their bodies.

However, in preparation for procedures involving RAI (treatment and diagnostic whole-body scan), doctors require patients to undergo thyroid hormone withdrawal (THW), or the suspension of levothyroxine, in order to elevate levels of thyroid stimulating hormone or TSH. Elevated levels of TSH enables effective absorption of RAI in the thyroid bed.

RAI destroys remnant tissues and is useful in monitoring for cancer tissue recurrence THW for patients usually takes 4-6 weeks. With the absence of a national consensus across the different healthcare professionals involved in thyroid cancer management, approaches in the care of patients vary per institution and per clinic. Hence, standardized and optimized treatment8 might not be offered to all thyroid cancer patients.

HYPOTHYROIDISM
Symptoms to watch out for during THW9
Aside from health consequence, hypothyroidism may affect a patient’s life in different ways —work performance, decision making, self-image, social activities, and the long term effect on the patient’s body.

The most common symptoms to watch out for are:

Physical
Less energy, fatigue
Cold intolerance
Drier skin and coarser hair
Mild weight gain (5-20 lbs)
Puffiness around the face (especially the eyes), hands, ankles, due to fluid build up

Mental
Slower mental function, irritability
New or worsening depression
Cardiovascular
Slowing of heart rate
Slightly higher blood pressure
Higher cholesterol levels

Hypothyroidism does not just cause symptoms; it can make other health conditions worse.

Treatment options
To avoid the consequences of hypothyroidism, patients have the option to use synthetic TSH* to keep them on levothyroxine thus preventing the symptoms and complications caused by hypothyroidism  The effect of synthetic TSH is the same as the natural elevation of TSH following THW.  It can stimulate remnant thyroid cells (whether normal or malignant) and to absorb iodine that is found in the blood stream, including RAI.

Patient support

*Synthetic TSH is a prescription medicine which can only be given by a doctor after assessments are done to patients in order to determine disease condition, suitability and other relevant factors.

Dr. Roberto Mirasol, a well-respected endocrinologist, and the Chief of the Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at St Luke's Medical Center poses with thyroid cancer survivor Janis Franchesca Celicious. Mirasol shares his knowledge about thyroid cancer, available treatment options, and hypothyroidism during a press conference held recently in Manila. Mirasol is also the Chief of the Section of Endocrinolgy, Diabetes and Metabolism at the Manila Doctors Hospital and the Head of the Diabetes and Thyroid Clinic at the Rizal Medical Center. Meanwhile, Celicious also shares with the media the ordeal she went through when she was diagnosed with thryroid cancer, and how she survived and triumph over her illness.

ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser: My amazing lifestyle buddy

amazing lifestyle buddy
ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser: My amazing lifestyle buddy

In this very advanced and digital world, innovation and recreation are the bywords. And for most of us, to cope up with everything that's happening around, we subconsciously search for more. What I mean is that, life is a continuous learning process, so for us, we crave for more, we want almost everything, we wish and hope for more, we always look for something that would best fit our lifestyle.

Therefore, we seek what we know would satisfy our taste, our level and those things that would matter to us with almost everything that we do, and it should also be something or anything that we can label as our Lifestyle.

As a full-time mom and a blogger, who's also active in social media (as they say), it is a must, and a viable requirement to possess a mobile phone which is very durable, user-friendly, high-tech, upgraded, very dependable and has an amazing camera specs. For me, those attributes should come in first before I consider its display and design.

Fortunately, those attributes that I've mentioned above were rolled into one! The modern display, build and design come as plus factors for me, (thank God!). And very timely as it may seem, my former mobile phone, (which I opted not to mention the brand), was slowly and gracefully waving goodbye to its owner. I guess it has reached its maximum and optimum function, Well, can't thank enough since it has also been my buddy for several months.

So now, I am facing another chapter of my life, with this brand new and so hot item, as hot as its color, the ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser or otherwise known as ZE500KL as its Model Name. ZenFone 2 Laser has a 5.0" HD (720x1280p) screen with Lollipop as its operating system (OS), It has a 2GB RAM with a Quad-core processor (1.2 GHz), has an expandable memory (micro SD) of up to 128GB, has a dual sim that allows 3G and LTE network (cool!), with an internal storage of 16GB, has a removable 2070mAH Prismatic battery. And for all the eager-to-know the specs of the cams, well, the rear cam has an aperture of 8MP while the front has 5MP. And last but definitely not the least, (brace yourselves!)... this is gonna be great, promise... ASUS has come up with an IPS display and Corning Gorilla Glass 4 which makes the entire mobile fone, durable, aren't you excited?!

Corning Gorilla glass 4 in ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser

Well, I am, isn't it so obvious? You see, being a person who's always busy and on the go, neither I or not anyone else can ever cause harm or scratch my latest lifestyle buddy. I cannot feel more secure with my mobile phone than today, You see, I don't really have to place a screen protector on my phone. That's so absolutely and amazingly tough! Definitely, a marvel of craftsmanship and engineering at the palm of every happy user.

Since I am now mentioning about how excited I am, just wanna share you the very first moments of my encounter with the amazing ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser. Take note, I availed the "Mini-movie" feature of this model, via the slideshow while I'm UNBOXING!!!

Did you enjoy watching? I hope so.. well, to give you a glimpse of what I did to test the its durability, I wanna show you this brief video, you'll be surprised!

See what I mean?

I used my main key on testing my ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser screen in an attempt to somehow put a scratch on it or cause minimal damage to it, but I technically failed, were you able to see it? You see at first, I was very hesitant to do it and I guess it's a normal reaction, right?! But in order to prove to all of you my dear amazing readers and of course to myself as well, I've conditioned my mind in performing this act. And it turned out that it is really an incomparable mobile phone! It cannot be easily compromised.

In addition, have you also noticed the sensitive and quick response of the gadget when I did the double tap on its screen? Definitely, there's no lag feeling when you click or tap on the icon or when you drag it along the screen simply because, it is the quickest compare to most Android phones that are 80 or 100 millisecond in response time. Truly, ZenFone 2 Laser is one of the quickest with a record-breaking touch response time of just 60ms!!!

Look how thin and sleek this ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser is! Its thinnest edge measures 3.9mm.

It doesn't easily slip from our hands, promise! And accountable to that, is its ergonomic arc design, with its curved back aside from the fact that it's thin. It is designed to comfortable fit our palm for ultimate comfort without sacrificing style- the back cover features an exquisite hairline design with a metallic finish.

Being a real foodie and admirer of different cuisines, the first shot I made using the rear cam of ASUS ZenFone Laser 2, was this...

I made a shot of this "Lechong Paksiw" using the "Depth of Field" rear cam setting of ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser

It's my family's fave  (and me) since most of us, Filipinos are really fond of this dish which derives from roasted pork.

Creamy Pesto with Grilled Cheese Sandwich (Auto-Focus)

Sumptuous Beef Caldereta (Depth of Field)

Need I say more? The pictures speak for themselves, and the message goes to your responsive eyes down to your tummy!

Normally, I do love to bond with my family. And I took the chance of testing the camera phone of ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser in an outdoor setting. We went to Blue Bay Walk located in EDSA, Pasay City.

Outdoor shot of the plants using the Auto mode

I took this shot from the same place where I was standing but this time, I used the "Depth of Field" of the rear camera mode.

Checking up on the three consecutive pictures above, I was able to zoom in and get the screenshots of the subjects using same photo. Notice how lucid, detailed, clear and amazing these photos are? With ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser, we'll never experience pixelation even in its maximum and closest range when we zoomed in.

I also took different shots using various rear camera mode so that you can also
#SeeWhatOthersCantSee

Auto Focus mode

The time and mood when I took these shots was around 4:30 in the afternoon and the weather was gloomy and it was about to rain, FYI.

HDR mode

Super Resolution

This shot was taken in an auto focus mode, and in reality, there was hardly any light that hits this area

When I changed the camera mode into low light, this was it! The bushes were much clearer and we can aptly identify the colors. nice right?!

I'll now transfer you to another location. This time, it was the Christmas tree lighting that was held more than a week ago at the Araneta Center in Cubao. Still, it was a night setting but much more challenging and yet very colorful!

Christmas tree lighting at the Araneta Center in Cubao, Quezon City. I used the Auto Focus mode.

It was a very astonishing, glittery and sparkling night! See the fireworks? It was perfectly captured by the rear cam, in spite of the fact that the subject was in motion. So love this!

Ms. Korina Sanchez took time to have her photo taken with these kids during the Christmas tree lighting., The Auto Focus mode was still on.

The Bb. Pilipinas 2015 winners were also present during the event. Can you see the colors in this pic? Very precise and detailed right?!

Everything was fast-paced during that night, good thing, I have my ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser  with me, I was able to capture every candid moment. I was able to #SeeWhatOthersCantSee again through these photos that I've taken, I really feel so lucky!!!

Next stop, is the very successful anniversary of one of the biggest agricultural conglomerates in the Philippines, it was held the the Quezon Memorial Circle. Take a closer look at the two pictures below. Noticed that they were performing a dance number,

They were also facing the sunset that time, so I opted to use of the Auto Focus, since the light coming from the sun was still helpful; anyway, natural light is always the best in photography. It was also very evident in the two pictures that my ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser was able to capture and elicit very clear-cut images of the performers despite their active and rapid moves.

You wanna know the technical reason for all these? Well, basically ZenFone 2 Laser is the first phone in the price range (so affordable!) to have an 8-megapixel rear camera guided with a laser auto-focus. It also has a dual-LED real tone flash and a 5-megapixel camera on the front.

The f/2.0-aperture Toshiba lens manages to focus the subject in a snap and therefore delivering shots with excellent details, saturation and contrast level in day-light conditions. The combination of the excellence hardware and software truly delivers the best in class camera solutions.

Another incredible attribute of ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser is its 0.03 second Laser Auto Focus. Its rear cam has laser auto focus technology for the fastest clarity, ZenFone 2 Laser's infrared laser measures distances at lightning speed-- and that means near-instant focus as fast as only 0.03 seconds.

If we compare it with traditional contrast focus, ZenFone 2 Laser is easily in the lead by up to 2 times faster speed, the infrared laser gets the most accurate distance of the object and the lens simply accelerate itself to the precise position for the imaging, whereas traditional focus need to detect the sharpness of the photo frame by frame hence the lens needs to travel and unnecessary distance that slows down the focusing time.

Okay, nuff of those techie matters. You know, I just can't control myself not to share with you two of the photos taken during the "Festival of Lights" held in Ayala, Makati City.I guess you've also heard about this annual festivity wherein there's a display of wide varieties of Christmas lights that may appear to be dancing along with the beat of the symphony of Christmas Carols; this only takes place during the second week of November 'til first week of January of the following year.

This year, they made use of lasers too to add attraction, fun and visual satisfaction for all the visitors who'd come and bond there every night.

The first frame (selfie) is also in Auto-Focus  mode while frame below it  I used the front cam via "Beautification" mode. It provides skin softening, skin brightening, blush, eyes enhance, cheek thinning and color correction.

This is the display for the "Beautification" mode

One of my fave features for this camera phone is its automatic countdown shutter, aside that it is indeed a pink shutter, it provides easy maneuver for the users especially when getting ready for a "selfie" or "groupfie" shot. The maximum timer would be until 5 seconds. The rear key can also be used when taking a selfie shot. Are you ready? SMILE!

Indoor setting via Auto Focus. Welcome to my living room!

with the "It Girls" during "Bestie" event in Eastwood

I know, I know, that's  supermodel Georgina Wilson and her bestie, sultry and gorgeous actress/ model/ singer  Solenn Heussaff , we are that close, you know  hahaha! But seriously, girl, am so glad about the outcome of our pic. This is so crystal clear and well-defined. ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser camera has really delivered and portrayed its real worth.

I also wanna share with you the sound and video recorded using my ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser

One hand Operation

Sometimes, during our most busiest days, we tend to just hold our mobile phones either by our left or right hand only while the other is also busy doing something. You see, ASUS has come up with the idea to include in their mobile phone's features the "One Hand Operation." Bright idea, right? In this way, we could somehow maneuver our phone with ease.

Hey you, IG lovers. IGrammers, and grid addicts, you don't have to install a photo editor or grid app if you're eyeing to purchase ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser! It provide high quality collage templates including magazine page, postcard, poster, album, CD cover, and many more to unleash your creativity.

Special thanks to my good friend/ blogger Rey Belen of lifestylebucket.com for the cover photo and this closing photo

After you've read my review about ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser, I hope I was able to enlighten you about this latest product. I do also hope that somehow you've enjoyed reading my piece.

I really love to share my experiences! Being a satisfied and happy user, I truthfully admit that, ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser is my amazing Lifestyle buddy! So confident to claim that I can now
#SeeWhatOthersCantSee
