Finovation reimagines the future of credit access through collaboration driven by technology and innovation

Aiming to strengthen financial literacy and inclusion in the Philippines, eCompareMo—the country’s leading website for banking and insurance services—presents Finovation 2019: Real Problems, Real Solutions.

First held in 2018, the event is expected to facilitate thought leadership to simplify and provide valuable financial services for more stakeholders.

Happening on September 25, 2019, at the Manila Peninsula Hotel, Finovation will bring together the nation’s leading banks, insurance companies, government regulators, and policymakers to address the financial needs of Filipinos, most especially credit access, via innovative and technical solutions.

Finovation’s goals are motivated by current consumer behavior toward credit and lending. Findings from a previous study conducted by eCompareMo and Rappler show that Filipinos, despite their glaring need for money and tendency to try out riskier lending schemes, engage less in formal financial services.

Some simply dislike the idea of credit cards, find them unnecessary, or think that they may encourage overspending. Others just don’t know how to apply for one, much less use and maintain it.

Those who do attempt to apply for a credit card often realize its value too late, or become discouraged after getting their application rejected. Majority of these respondents think that their salary grade or their credit history is insufficient for a successful application. Others just have completely no idea why they got rejected in the first place.

While the reasons and sentiments vary, they all stem from financial illiteracy and lack of inclusion. eCompareMo CEO Stephanie Chung sees this as a golden opportunity to improve access to proper financial education, reiterating that this is the first step toward reimagining credit access and strengthening financial infrastructure. “Filipinos need to understand that they need to educate themselves first about these financial concepts,” says Chung. “At the same time, industry leaders need to help the public understand what they must do to empower themselves financially, so more people can close the gap between being a rejected applicant to somebody who the banks will consider for credit services.”

Chung advises that educating more people about credit and responsible lending can help them improve not only their credit scores and bank relationships, but also their overall lives. She positions the credit card as an indispensable tool that can assist with both day-to-day needs and emergencies. To achieve these benefits, Chung and her partners have engineered eCompareMo to help more Filipinos espouse responsible credit use through advanced financial technology.

Partnering with leading banks and insurance companies to create a marketplace for their services, eCompareMo also offers the latest innovations to their clients, helping them expand their reach and impact. Users of the portal are seamlessly linked to the financial or insurance product that perfectly fits their needs and budget.

Through Finovation, eCompareMo hopes to spark more conversations and help fine-tune fintech solutions, gathering ideas from diverse thought leaders. Headlining this year’s event is the Governor of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Benjamin Diokno.

Panel discussions on the current credit and financial inclusion landscape in the Philippines, customer centricity of financial services, credit scoring, and responsible lending will also engage attendees, all geared toward rebuilding and strengthening the necessary infrastructure for financial literacy and inclusion.

Ever since young entrepreneur Larry Evans Tan brought CoCo to the Philippines five years ago from the milk tea capital of the world, Taiwan, CoCo has rapidly become a top player in the Filipino milk tea craze and is one of the strongest markets of the CoCo brand worldwide.
CoCo leads in the global tea market with a formidable 4,000 branches spread out across the world and posting an incredible sale of 100 cups per second globally. In the Philippines, where it has become the go-to milk tea brand, one CoCo cup is sold every 4 minutes via delivery alone—further proving the love for CoCo that expands beyond the physical store.

Coco Philippines Gen. Manager Larry Evans Tan

“We’ve seen how well CoCo was received by Filipinos. The CoCo Chill Camp is our way of showing our loyal fans and supporters that we feel their love. And so we want to give them back the happiness that our drinks have brought to their lives, by giving them an experience that’s uniquely created for them,” said Tan, CoCo Philippines General Manager.

The CoCo Chill Camp showcased fun activities for everyone’s delight, including a CoCo Panda Pit, CoCo Pachinko, and CoCo Pearl Toss. These games come with with exciting prizes for lucky guests.

Social media rockstars, who are self-confessed CoCo lovers, ThatsBella, Rei Germar, Janina Vela and LA Aguinaldo, joined the other CoCo fans on the opening day, sharing their love for the brand and revealing their favorite CoCo drinks. ThatsBella and Rei also had the opportunity to visit Taiwan last month to interview CoCo founder Chairman Tommy Hung.

Cheers!!!

And if CoCo fans could not seem to get enough of the bestsellers—Panda Milk Tea, 3 Buddies Milk Tea, White Pearl Milk Tea, and Passion Fruit Tea Burst, CoCo launched a new flavor that is quickly starting to be the new favorite—the Caramel Chocolate Cream, EXCLUSIVE to the Philippine market.

Panda Milk Tea

3 Buddies Milk Tea

This latest concoction of sweetness, as Tan described it: “waves of caramel blended with chocolate slush over velvety salty cream makes a drink that is decadent for the local palate.”

Explaining the rationale behind this new Philippines-only product, Tan said, “We wanted to create a unique offering that we know the Philippine market would be drawn to. What’s better than caramel and chocolate? This is definitely something new beyond the milk tea that CoCo is known for.” Tan explained.

White Pearl Milk Tea

Passion Fruit Tea

The overwhelming reception of CoCo in the Philippines made Tan very much optimistic with the future of CoCo among Filipino milk tea lovers. “We are definitely responding to the clamor of our customers into bringing CoCo more accessible to them, we are opening our 2nd branch in Cebu by the end of the month and we’ll be opening our 1st Mindanao branch soon.  And we continue to explore with new flavors that we know our customers would love,” he revealed.

The CoCo Chill Camp will run until September 19 and Tan invites all CoCo fans to join in the fun and bring their friends and families to experience the dynamic vibe in the camp that the brand is known for.

Lessons in life... Lessons in GCash

Cautious? Yes, that's me. Practical but picky, yes... it's still me!
Being a mom, and having a family must've taught me to be more cautious and practical in life. Honestly, if there are new innovations or re-creations being introduced in the market, or let's just say, an ad that's "too good to be true," my first reaction is to have doubts about it and be more keen if that "thing" or "product" had caught my attention.

In this very modern day, a lot of people rely much on "plastic" or the so-called credit card, yes it's actually good only if you use it responsibly, right? Then there's this "cashless" payment app wherein people can do alot of things using the app. Being an "old school" (there's still a part of me, yes hihi) , I always pay my bills, or any services even when shopping or doing my groceries via cash not until this one very unforgettable day that happened...

As a working mom, the challenge for me is time management. Of course, I can do multi-tasking but only if time and space permits. If I am in the office, I can only do what my job requires me to accomplish. Part of my time management is going out of our house during office days two hours with two hours or more allowance for travel, my day ends when the bank closes and that most of the time, my work demands me to stay in the office and skip break time or else I just sneak on some snacks. I know some of you could also relate with this scenario. :)) With that kind of schedule, I cannot do bank transactions too, and this has pained me when this one family emergency happened.

Barely a month ago, I've received a call from my niece from the province, as soon as I've heard her quivering voice, I knew something not good happened and I kinda sensed that it was an urgent matter. True enough, she'd told me to lend her some money because her father who's my brother-in-law, was rushed to the hospital and needed immediate medical attention and that includes series of lab tests and meds. She said she had ran out of funds and wasn't prepared for that to happen. I received her call while I was on my way home, I was so worried and stressed thinking of the fastest and easy way to help my niece and my brother-in-law.

While on my way home, I called up sister who had recently given birth to a bouncing baby boy, to ask for advice as to how to handle the situation as I'd really like to help them. I guess my sister had also sensed my panic-ish voice as much as I want to be calm, I can't (you know what I mean), since all the banks were all closed I was beginning to feel helpless and hopeless. A ray of sunshine suddenly appeared when my sister told me that there is still a way to send money... she told me download the GCash app immediately.

No other choice for me that time, the picky, practical and cautious mom had to heed the advice of a millennial mom (my sister). As soon as I registered and input my details, I find the app very user-friendly, I got my account verified too so, I was able to use the "Send to Bank" feature. When the transaction was concluded, I was notified by GCash thru SMS or text, I felt half-accomplished and when my niece had informed me that she was able to withdraw the money from the ATM at the hospital, I was soooo relieved! I've noticed that Gcash could also go well with other networks (aside for Globe) like Smart, Sun and Talk 'N Text. Thank God there's GCash and thank you to my sister who's helped me realized what I've been missing the whole time!

The lab tests were done to my brother-in-law, the doctors had administered the proper meds, my niece was so relieved and thankful... they just have to watch out for my brother-in-law's diet and lifestyle to avoid the abrupt increase in blood pressure again, should also heed doctor's advise and to never fail to drink his prescribed meds. All's well that ends well.

I've learned a lot of things from that "experience." Firstly, to stay calm and still have the presence of mind during critical moments. To be careful with what we eat and live a healthy lifestyle. Then to be open to brand new ideas and innovations (as long as it's not harmful), and to be patient and thankful for whatever we're going through in life, remember that every problem has always a corresponding solution to it. Just think, work for it and never hesitate to ask for help there's always someone out there that could really be our "angel" in disguise.

Since that very "unforgettable moment" happened, I am now a happy and satisfied Gcash user. Not only I've learned those lessons in life but I've also learned how to download, use Gcash and I am now entrusting my bills and other services even in shopping to this amazing app. We could all go "cashless" almost everyday with Gcash!!!

From September 18 to 20, users can show support to local farmers and score deals up to 20% off on all-natural products

Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, partners with Go Negosyo, the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship’s official advocacy, to digitize the agricultural industry in the Philippines. The initiative equipped farmers with the skills and knowledge to sell their homegrown products online.

Through this partnership, local farmers can promote their products directly to consumers, as well as expand their reach nationwide via Shopee. They can also reach more customers at minimal cost, allowing them to deliver quality local produce to online shoppers at competitive and affordable prices.

By being on Shopee, they are able to expand their market reach by leveraging our platform’s wide user base as well as enjoy a seamless online selling experience. At the same time, consumers will enjoy greater access to organic and homegrown products while supporting our local farmers.”
The project kicked off with a special Shopee University class geared toward agricultural cooperatives. Farmers and agri-entrepreneurs owners were taught the basics and benefits of e-commerce.

Ginggay Hontiveros-Malvar, Adviser for Agripreneurship at Go Negosyo, said, “We are grateful to Shopee for providing an inclusive and convenient way for farmers to sell their products online.  Through this project, Shopee is enabling the agricultural industry to grow and touch base with consumers nationwide. We look forward to strengthening our partnership and creating more initiatives that benefit small entrepreneurs.”

Go Negosyo-affiliated farmers, which participated in the class, will showcase their local all-natural products on Shopee from September 18 to 20. Users can look forward to discounts of up to 20% off on various local agricultural products. There will also be an additional ₱100 off for a minimum spend of ₱500 with the voucher SPHGOLOCAL.
