‘Gary V: On Higher Ground’ at Music Museum

GARY V opens the summer season with a series of 8 concerts at the Music Museum, marking his 29th anniversary in the industry and the 25th year of his company Manila Genesis Entertainment & Management, Inc. Stricken by Type 1 juvenile diabetes for 30 years now, this unmatched performer has been a shining beacon of inspiration in the country and he remains complication-free and still, on top of his game. Gary has consistently inspired his millions of fans through his craft as a singer, musician, songwriter, video producer, dancer, actor, musical arranger and a multi-awarded television host/performer for 9 years on the undisputed top-rating musical variety show, “ASAP.”

After visiting typhoon victims in Cagayan De Oro and Iligan for UNICEF, Gary V jumpstarted the year with a new segment on “ASAP 2012” entitled “With Love: Gary V” – a spin-off of his platinum CD under Star Records and his much-talked about television special which aired seven times on ABS-CBN and MYX in 2011 and twice on The Filipino Channel. The segment features Gary as he showcases stories of love, forgiveness, redemption, and faith while he sings songs that celebrate the beauty and goodness of humanity. “With Love Gary Valenciano,” the CD compiles the soap opera and movie theme songs which he performed and recorded for ABS-CBN and Star Cinema. Just this March, Gary, together with the ASAP team, flew to Cagayan De Oro to shoot a video with a courageous flood victim for his segment.  All these efforts let led to “On Higher Ground,” a fundraiser for UNICEF and the Shining Light Foundation, two faithful partners dear to Gary V, who has been National Ambassador for UNICEF for 14 years now.

In his stellar career, one of Gary’s most celebrated corporate relationships was with Coca-Cola with whom he had a contract for over ten years. Two years ago, he was tapped to launch their refreshing product, Real Leaf, and this year was invited again to record “Tuloy Ang Happiness” the 100th Year official anthem of Coca-Cola with Sarah Geronimo and Someday Dream, with powerful appearances at the Gala Night at Makati Shangrila as well as the “Concert Ng Bayan” at SM MOA last March 26.

The country is excited for Gary’s much awaited return to the silver screen via an upcoming movie under Straight Shooters Media entitled “I Do Bidoo Bidoo” which he will star in together with Zsa Zsa Padilla, Eugene Domingo, Sam Concepcion, and Ogie Alcasid. He has appeared in 13 films for Regal Films, Seiko Films, Viva Films, and Star Cinema.

For his concert series at Music Museum, fans can look forward to witnessing Gary V in his best element as he performs his greatest hits as well as some of today’s hottest chart-toppers, party anthems, and homegrown favorites. Fans can also expect groundbreaking and pioneering technology and excellent audio-visuals through their corporate partners Videosonic and Soundcheck.

“I’m very excited and at the same time a bit nervous because we have come up with new routines and a lot of surprises for this series,” says Gary. “I am particularly excited for our opening production number. It will be awesome. I really hope it works the way I envisioned it.”  Gary V will be performing with two world-class musicians, Awit Awards 2008 Best Female/Best New Female Singer Julianne and Juan Miguel Salvador, formerly of Rage Band and now the musical director of Authority, which represented the country in the 2005 Global Battle of the Bands in London.

“Gary V: On Higher Ground” happens at Music Museum on April 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, and 27; and May 9 and 10. The show will be for the benefit of UNICEF and Shining Light Foundation. The show is supported by ABS-CBN, MYX, Smart, Soundcheck, Videosonic, Gold’s Gym, Aficionado, Coca Cola, Goldilocks, Lee, Universal Records, Star Records, Studio V, Essensuals Toni & Guy, Fernando’s, with media partners: Radio High 105.9, Crossover 105.1, Monster Radio RX 93.1, Tambayan, Magic 89.9, DZMM 630, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Philippine Star, Business World, People’s Journal and People’s Tonight.

“Gary V: On Higher Ground” will be directed by Gary and son Paolo Valenciano with Musical Direction by Mon Faustino. Tickets are priced at Php 3,500.00, 2,500.00, 1,500.00, 1,000.00, and 500.00. It is best to apply generously and evenly unto skin, 15 minutes before exposure to sunlight. Re-apply at frequent intervals after swimming and towel drying.

DON'T LET GLAUCOMA DARKEN YOUR LIFE

During my college years, I've learned that Glaucoma is an increased intra-ocular pressure which primarily affects the elderly and it is hereditary in nature. Aside from the dreadful cataract, glaucoma is a complicated disease in which damage to the optic nerve leads to progressive, irreversible vision loss.

Little did I know that Glaucoma is now being ranked as the leading cause of blindness in both eyes, according to the Philippine National Survey of Blindness. As of now, no current reliable estimates as to how many Filipinos have the disease. I guess one reason for that, is ignorance or lack of the disease's background,  late detection and most of the patients disregard their condition since most cases develop Glaucoma gradually and painlessly and without any symptoms. This disease of the eye is a blindness with permanent paralysis and is being taken much too lightly.

In connection with this and in celebration of World Glaucoma Week (March 12-16, 2012), the Philippine Glaucoma Society along with Allergan brings scientific excellence and rigor in delivering leading products that address glaucoma. Allergan goes beyond providing education and information. With the highest level of integrity, Allergan helps patients understand the choices available to them and make well-informed treatment decisions with their doctors.

Dr. Imelda Yap-Veloso, President of Philippine Glaucoma Society

Allergan is a global, technology-driven multi-specialty health care company pursuing therapeutic advances to help patients live life to their fullest potential while the Philippine Glaucoma Society is an internationally-recognized leader in providing excellent glaucoma care in the Philippines through education, exchange of ideas, research and publication.

The Philippine Glaucoma Society also strives eradicate glaucoma by increasing awareness of the disease in the community, healthcare system, policy-making bodies, and among patients afflicted with the disease. The Society also aims to educate the community, provide improved service for indigent patients, and initiate research on glaucoma.

During the event, which was held at Shangri La Makati, Glaucoma was very keenly tackled: It slowly and gradually impairs vision. Like the dreaded disease, cancer, it has no cure and it commonly shows no signs in the early stages nor painful symptoms. Moreover, a small number of patients with glaucoma also experience episodes of eye pain, blurred vision, redness, headache, vomiting, and seeing rainbows around lights. The disease permanently damages the optic nerve, which is what connects the eye to the brain, and causes a shrinking of the visual field.

Dr. Jose Ma. Martinez, Vice President of the Philippine Glaucoma Society

I've also learned that, early detection prevents blindness. It is often stated in medicine that prevention is better than cure. Early detection and treatment of glaucoma is important to control it. Once diagnosed, the unlucky patient must follow-up with their physicians for the rest of their lives.
Glaucoma is not picky. It can afflict a person regardless of age, health, or race. Glaucoma can occur at any age, but the most commonly affected are the older individuals.Patients who are most likely to contract glaucoma usually have family history of the disease, high eye pressure, a previous eye injury, chronic steroid use and/or diabetes mellitus.

Dr. Rainier Covar, member of the Research Committee of the Philippine Glaucoma Society

In the case of glaucoma, contracting the hereditary form of the disease may not be preventable but early diagnosis and treatment can certainly help prevent blindness. Glaucoma can be prevented by having regular eye check-ups. Immediately consult your eye doctor/ophthalmologist if you have blurry vision or if you have eye pain.

Left to Right: Dr. Norman Aquino, Hannah Pia De Guzman, Manolito Reyes, Ma. Zita Meriales, Mario Aquino - Founding President of the Philippine Glaucoma Society, Dr. Rainier Covar, Dr. Imelda Yap -Veloso, President of Philippine Glaucoma Society, Dr. Jose Ma. Martinez, Vice President of Philippine Glaucoma Society, Dr. Nilo Flor Cruz

With these elite and perfect group of medical professionals who are very much willing to help us be aware of Glaucoma, there is hope. There can be a bright future. If we do it right, we can escape the darkness.

The 7th Philippine Sudoku Super Challenge (PSSC) is hosted by SM Supermallls in cooperation with Mathematics Trainer's Guild Philippines (MTG)

I'm pretty sure most of us know how to play SUDOKU, right? It's one of the pages/ sections we seek for in a broadsheet or newspaper ;-). But, have you ever thought what Sudoku means and what was its history?

According to Wikipedia, it's a logic-based combinatorial number-placement puzzle. Its objective is to fill a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 sub-grids that compose the grid (also called "boxes", "blocks", "regions", or "sub-squares") contains all of the digits from 1 to 9. The puzzle setter provides a partially completed grid, which typically has a unique solution.
Completed puzzles are always a type of Latin square with an additional constraint on the contents of individual regions. For example, the same single integer may not appear twice in the same 9×9 playing board row or column or in any of the nine 3×3 subregions of the 9×9 playing board.
The puzzle was popularized in 1986 by the Japanese puzzle company Nikoli, under the name Sudoku, meaning single number. It became an international hit in 2005.

HISTORY

Number puzzles appeared in newspapers in the late 19th century, when French puzzle setters began experimenting with removing numbers from magic squares. Le Siècle, a Paris-based daily, published a partially completed 9×9 magic square with 3×3 sub-squares on November 19, 1892. It was not a Sudoku because it contained double-digit numbers and required arithmetic rather than logic to solve, but it shared key characteristics: each row, column and sub-square added up to the same number.
On July 6, 1895, Le Siècle's rival, La France, refined the puzzle so that it was almost a modern Sudoku. It simplified the 9×9 magic square puzzle so that each row, column and broken diagonals contained only the numbers 1–9, but did not mark the sub-squares. Although they are unmarked, each 3×3 sub-square does indeed comprise the numbers 1–9 and the additional constraint on the broken diagonals leads to only one solution.
These weekly puzzles were a feature of French newspapers such as L'Echo de Paris for about a decade but disappeared about the time of World War I.
According to Will Shortz, the modern Sudoku was most likely designed anonymously by Howard Garns, a 74-year-old retired architect and freelance puzzle constructor from Indiana, and first published in 1979 by Dell Magazines as Number Place (the earliest known examples of modern Sudoku). Garns's name was always present on the list of contributors in issues of Dell Pencil Puzzles and Word Games that includedNumber Place, and was always absent from issues that did not. He died in 1989 before getting a chance to see his creation as a worldwide phenomenon. It is unclear if Garns was familiar with any of the French newspapers listed above.
The puzzle was introduced in Japan by Nikoli in the paper Monthly Nikolist in April 1984 as Sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru (数字は独身に限る?), which can be translated as "the digits must be single" or "the digits are limited to one occurrence." (In Japanese, dokushin means an "unmarried person".) At a later date, the name was abbreviated to Sudoku (數獨) by Maki Kaji (鍜治 真起 Kaji Maki?), taking only the first kanji of compound words to form a shorter version. In 1986, Nikoli introduced two innovations: the number of givens was restricted to no more than 32, and puzzles became "symmetrical" (meaning the givens were distributed in rotationally symmetric cells). It is now published in mainstream Japanese periodicals, such as the Asahi Shimbun. (Taken from Wikipedia)

Just recently, SM Supermalls inks an agreement with Mathematics Trainer's Guild, Philippines (MTG) to host the 7th Philippine Sudoku Super Challenge (PSSC).

The 7th PSSC will kick off through a regional elimination rounds which will be held simultaneously on October 14, 2012 at different SM Supermalls in Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao and NCR serving as regional centers. Regional champions will compete in the national finals on January 27, 2013 at the SM North Edsa Annex.

Millie Dizon, SM Supermalls Vice President for Marketing and Communications

SM Supermalls Vice President for Marketing and Communications Millie Dizon gave cognizance to Sudoku as a good exercise in developing the minds of the youths towards global excellence in Math and Sudoku not to mention that the event also promotes camaraderie among participating students coming  from both the public and private schools. And that SM, in consonance with its Social Corporate Responsibility thrusts, takes pride in hosting this activity as part of their contribution to educational development of our youths.

MTG Philippines, headed by its President Dr. Simon L. Chua, develops every year different types and structures of Sudoku puzzles to serve different categories of contestants to wit: Sudoku Grand Master (professional level), Sudoku Wizard (secondary level) and the Sudoku Whiz Kids (for kids below 12 years old). The MTG prepares the puzzles with graduated difficulty and of varied types in order to familiarize the participants in time for the national finals of Sudoku competition.

Sudoku activities aim to illicit interests among students in math and Sudoku noting that with SM Supermalls  venues, the contestants grew in number ever year. The grand champions for each category at the national level will take home cash prizes and trophies and can become the official representatives to the World Sudoku Contest held every year. Our Filipino contestants usually come home with their winning medals and trophies bringing honor and pride to our country, their respective families and schools.

I guess, from our end, we really have to give our utmost support to the 7th Philippine Sudoku Super Challenge (PSSC). Kudos to SM Supermalls and MTG for promoting these kinds of competition which produces top Filipino representatives and winners.

Special thanks to my blogger/ friend Jenny Roxas of www.joyfullifeofjen.blogspot.com
