ACTS OFW: A Partylist that supports the LGBT Community

May 11, 2019

ACTS OFW was born out of the needs of millions of OFWs working in the Middle East, which account for the majority of OFWs with concern/issues about their employment, for a better representations in the Government through its representative in the 17th Congress, Congressman John Bertiz, by crafting House Bills and Resolutions for their welfare and protection. This was manifested by all the House Bills and Resolutions that was filed at the start of the 17th Congress by ACTS OFW Partylist, all for the benefits of Migrant Filipino Workers.

AOMEA was conceptualized in July 2016, during the visit of Secretary Bello of DOLE and Congressman John Bertiz of ACTS OFW Partylist, as part of the Crisis Management Team created by the Duterte Government, to help our distressed OFWs in KSA brought by economic.

And just recently, we've met their sole representative,  Cong. Aniceto "John" Bertiz III and ACTS OFW he Vice President for International Affairs Ms. Rhodora Pascual-Morales.

ACTS OFW Cong. Aniceto "John" Bertiz III with ACTS OFW VP for International Affairs Ms. Rhodora "Doray" Pascual-Morales during the meeting with the LGBTQ community held at the Club Filipino
During the meeting, Cong. Bertiz re-assured that they will support the LGBT Anti-Discrimination Bill and will have it passed in the Congress as soon as they attain the office in the Congress again. The said bill will actually protect the rights of the lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders in the workplace and in the schools, as well as the right to set-up business or practice a profession. It will also give them the equal rights that are the birth right of each and every Filipino.
It was a very well-attended event and I could feel the warm reception of the LGBTQ community as they cheer for Cong. Bertiz III promise of allegiance and support.  He committed to some members and representative of the various sects of the LGBTQ community most especially to those who were present at the solidarity event. This was after they consulted with the group and with their many members overseas, some of whom are also LGBT's.
According to Cong. Bertiz III, "We have overseas Filipino workers who are also members of the LGBT community. We have seen how hard they work so they could provide for their families back home. The LGBTs are the winners and the backbone of their families. They have sent their brothers and sisters to school and have taken care of their parents' medical needs. Therefore we should give them the protection that is enshrined in the Bill of Rights  of our Philippine Constitution."
As per Ladlad Chairman Professor Danton Remoto he lauded this commitment from a party list whose focus is to have the best ethical practices in the overseas recruitment industry. He even said that, "I am also an Overseas Filipino Worker teaching at a British University in Malaysia. I welcome the consultation done by ACTS OFW party list with us regarding LGBTQ rights. Fighting for the rights of the LGBTQ will always be a prime advocacy of Ladlad Party List." Prof. Remoto is running for Councilor of District 1 in Quezon City.
The Acronym ACTS OFW stands for "Alliance for Community Transformation and Service for Overseas Filipino Workers." It was founded in the year 2010 and had pushed for the 10-year validity for our passport and the  creation of 1,000 more slots daily for OFW applicants. They also work for the exemption of OFWs from the Php550 terminal fee, among many other legislative measures to help our OFWs dubbed the unsung heroes of our country.
